IC INFORMATION
PREINCARNATION
Name: Azrael
Canon: Lucifer (2016 Netflix series)
Age: Apparent age is late 20s, early 30s - actual age is multiple millennia.
Species: Angel
Appearance: Short, skinny and a fashion sense toeing the line between hipster and rummage sale reject. Tends to have at least one animal on her clothes at all times. Baby-faced but Tired. When disguised as a human (also featuring red stockings and Doc Martens); and in her actual angel form.
History:
Her known history is rather limited, but what has been established is this much: Azrael is the Angel of Death. Ever since the Angels were created, she has been responsible for harvesting the souls of humans to deliver them to the Silver City - the show's take on Heaven. Not Hell, however; souls are shown to descend to Hell of their own accord without her intervention. She comes across as always having been fairly content with this role in her existence. Up until her older brother Samael - now Lucifer - was cast out of the Silver City, he and Azrael had a close relationship, to the point that she considered him her best friend, and would eagerly participate in pranks against their oldest sibling Amenadiel. Azrael did not take part in the Rebellion that lead to Lucifer being cast into Hell, but she notes that the whole family was rocked - particularly her. But she didn't do anything about it for literal millenia: instead she stayed in her lane, doing her job with the utmost care but, after several millenia and several multiple billion humans, not having any passion in it, nor particularly caring about the people that she had to take to Heaven, citing them as 'morose' and depressing to interact with on an endless scale.
Until some twenty or so years ago, when she met an eight-year-old girl named Ella Lopez in a gnarly car accident that left Ella in a dying state - and though she did make a full recovery later, she was dying enough that she was able to interact with Azrael, and - apparently for the first time - stuck around while Ella was rescued. Azrael herself noted that this was because Ella made her feel actually good about herself, something no other soul had apparently ever done. It left Azrael wanting to see her again, so whenever she had to come by the area she'd go and visit Ella - calling herself a ghost, rather than an invisible angel because it seemed less weird. This had an adverse affect on Ella, however, who got socially ostracized and put on meds by a doctor who thought she was crazy, so five years ago she and Azrael agreed to stop hanging out, for Ella's own mental well-being.
In the present day, Azrael has gone back to doing her job as usual, with no Ella and no Lucifer. Until she relocates Ella one day, and convinces her to stay in Los Angeles where she has people who love her, and not to move back to Detroit with her dead-beat family. She also relocates Lucifer, and finally talks to him after several millenia having left him believing she was actively ignoring him; unfortunately, their cumulative conversation is less than five minutes long, as she almost immediately departs again, possibly due to the call of another dying person.
REINCARNATION
Name: Celestial Ray Jones
Age: 29
Appearance: A boring old human, same as anyone else. Her clothing style tends towards rather plain and practical, nothing that would make her stand out more than she has to. Likes blue.
History: In this reincarnated world, there's a classic English rock band that rose above: Copilot, whose success can be measured on the same scale as the Beatles or Queen. Their frontman and founder, Bob Jones, was their most famous member; and of his small army of adopted children, Celestial Ray Jones was the least famous.
It was in the height of Copilot's fame that Celestial Ray was adopted and named - because Bob Jones had found religion and an American wife not ten years prior, and thusly started adopting children and 'saving them' from either obscurity or terrible normal-people lives, Ray was never sure. But she was one of the last, of the many children adopted from around the world and blessed with highly evangelical and self-congratulatory names; and all of them were thrust into the limelight before they could walk, dragged on tours spanning the globe (and resulting in very unplacable accents for them all, as they grew up in said same), as much a part of the Copilot and Bob Jones brand as the music itself, and their father had big plans for all his children, wanting them all to grow up and pursue noble, philanthropic goals.
Celestial Ray was a little too young to have a proper opinion on all of that, though - until her older brother Sacrament (who chose the new name Lucas, causing even further divides than his constant negative press already had) broke out of the family in a big messy display at age eighteen, when Celestial Ray was only twelve, and struck out on his own. That her favourite of all her brothers was the one to do so shook up Celestial Ray and their other siblings, and it got her seriously thinking about how their family worked, and what the hell this all even was.
She kept in touch with Lucas through letters and later emails, and went to visit him in person on her eighteenth birthday, but she continued to stay under their father's rule for most of her early adulthood. It wasn't until she was twenty-two that she finally made the decision to do something for herself, and signed up for a marine biology course in a nice, quiet, out-of-the-way town that her family wouldn't bother coming to harass her in - Mossgate. Even if, thanks to having a series of tutors rather than a formal education, she had to take a couple of years of NVQs (specifically level 3 NVQ in tending animals, plants and land) in order to be eligible for her Bachelor's, leading her to take two extra years in her course; following that, she went on to study a Master's, which has lead to her living in Mossgate for a little over six and a half years total - in the process of which, she bought an apartment on the high street, because she needs somewhere decent to live.
As of now, with the summer holidays and her time in education finally finishing, she has a new problem on her hands: what the fuck is she going to do with herself now, with all this free time? Look for a job, maybe? Who knows, it's a mystery.
First Echo: Heading towards Mossgate University, and spotting an eldery woman stumble and fall. Ray rushed over to help her, and aided her towards a bench next to a large set of double gates. The specific scenario of actively helping someone towards the gates was a unique happenstance, and triggered the following echo:
Delivering a person, whose face she cannot determine, into the care of a second person - male, she knows that much, but any other discerning information is impossible to make out beyond the brilliant silvery gates behind him. The gates are only about eight feet tall but also, somehow, impossibly, they're infinitely large, impossible to mount or break down, and a pearlescent silver that glows with a warm white light from within. The echo imparts the knowledge that Heaven, the Pearly Gates, the Silver City - the entire concept is very much physically real.
PERSONALITY
Pre-Incarnation Personality:
Azrael is one of the children of God - in this world, that means angels, created with a set role that would define their entire existence and the full expectation from God that they would not deviate from that path. And for all of them - with one notable exception, In The Beginning - that meant being unfailingly obedient to whatever Dad created or ordered them to do. But after Lucifer got cast out of the Silver City and the Rebellion he started got crushed, Azrael's worldview was shaken.
Azrael states that she was one of the younger siblings, referring to Lucifer as her big brother, which implies she may have been one of the youngest. This has given her something of an inferiority complex in that regard; with just how many siblings they have, it's very easy for her to get overlooked, especially when her main role in this existence is to go out and interact with dying mortals. And with how angels are shown across the board to be rather disparaging towards humanity as a whole (thanks to both their inherent weakness, and the implicit sense that humanity as a whole ranks higher in God's priorities than the angels themselves do), it's likely that she gets even less respect from her siblings over that, only furthering her feelings of worthlessness. On the other hand, though, unlike most of her siblings she isn't scared of their eldest sibling Amenadiel - this is due to Lucifer and her pranking him relentlessly before his fall, and thus seeing him in enough disgrace that she thinks his angry face is funny rather than scary.
Since she spends all of her time with dead or dying humans - combined with the aforementioned lack of respect angels have for humans - Azrael has a bit of an unconsciously contemptuous bias against humans. She's been dealing with humans dying since they were first created, and nowadays simply refers to dead humans as 'morose' as a whole; though this could be less elitism and more simply being jaded from dealing with humans for thousands of years. There's one notable exception to her opinion of them, however - and Ella was so notable that Azrael actively started seeking out opportunities to continue being in her presence. She even actively implies that she is not used to feeling good about herself before she met Ella. Because she's spent so much time with Ella, and has been present to watch Ella's family and their relationships, she also has a healthy understanding of what constitutes a healthy familial relationship, and is self-aware enough to identify them within her own family. However, since she's also not had a deep interaction with a human for five years, her slang is slightly outdated.
She's also implied to have a rather large guilt complex, specifically revolving around Lucifer: how she missed him for being the only person who would listen to her ramble on about whatever was on her mind; how she never stepped in to do anything when he got kicked out; how she didn't get around to seeing him for literal millenia because she was afraid of how awkward it would be. There's no indication as to whether this cleared up after finally getting to speak to Lucifer during the course of the single episode she was in, but with how quickly she retreated when the conversation reached a head, it's likely she felt too awkward to continue.
When she's around someone she's actually comfortable with, on the other hand, she's openly cheerful with a very dry sense of humour and a propensity towards terrible one-liners. She's not afraid to lie or make terrible excuses, despite how hard she encourages Ella to be open and honest. she's implied to be a chronic rambler when she gets onto a topic she's passionate about. She has a relatively thorough understanding of modern society, thanks to spending several years being friends with Ella in her formative years. She has an extremely precocious streak, willing to prank people and be quite silly about things. She was also very passionate about things that happened on Earth, though living with the other angels meant that she didn't have anyone else (except Lucifer) to share this passion with, and so Lucifer was the only one who got to hear her extended rambling monologues about whatever subject crossed her mind. She is very quick to 'I told you so' someone, and in general is a very sincere, genuine person with a quirky playful side. Boo normal.
Any differences?:
Celestial Ray has an actual sense of self-worth, that being a famous adopted child with an evangelist father and semi-absent mother hasn't quite managed to kill. Probably this is largely thanks to Lucas's continued existence in her life.
Relatedly: has an open and positive relationship with Lucifer/Lucas.
She's a very quiet person, as opposed to the gregarious and cheerful Azrael.
Rather obsessed with ocean life, thanks to her study, instead of just generally fascinated with humans and humanity.
Unreliable with deadlines or appointments. Almost always late for meet-ups.
Abilities: Written in collaboration with Blue for her Lucifer app
Angel Physiology: Azrael is an angel (albeit one of the relatively youngest of the lot), which gives her a range of supernatural abilities. These include:
Superhuman strength and reflexes: Angels are capable of feats such as bending metal with their bare hands, holding a car trying to speed off and punching someone across a room.
Superhuman metabolism: While she would still be affected by drugs and alcohol, it takes significantly more for it to have an effect.
Durability: Bullets don't pierce her skin.
Immortality: Angels live forever and don't age.
Near invulnerability: Azrael is invulnerable to everything except other angels, demons, and celestial or hell-forged weapons.
Wings: Part and parcel of being an angel. Big fawny brown ones, that have the following abilities:
Divine essence: Being literal manifestations of an angel's divine nature, the sight of an angel's can have a profound effect on humans (though this varies - it's more about how well a particular human can handle the revelation that the divine is real).
Transdimensional flight: She can fly between different levels of reality (specifically for her world, this refers to Heaven, Hell, and Earth). It does have a limit, however - she can't fly to other universes.
Super quick flight: At times angels seem to be able to move very quickly between one place to another. However, it's not really clear whether this is something like teleportation, or just very quick movement.
Healing: The feathers are capable of healing, including wounds made from hell-forged weapons.
Manifesting: Angel wings can appear and disappear at will. It's not explained where they go when 'away', or how they seem to be able to manifest through clothing.
Bladed feathers: The primaries can become sharp and be used as bladed weapons.
Creating concussive force: The wings are strong enough to create gusts of wind that can push people back several feet.
Self-actualisation: Angels' personality, self-image, and feelings about themselves will literally define their form and more unique abilities. While this isn't something that Azrael has personally exhibited, we know it can cause such things as self-loathing causing their physical form to become monstrous, or feeling unworthy of their powers to completely lose them up until they do feel worthy again.
Languages: Azrael speaks all the languages spoken by souls that have died and require her intervention - which effectively means she can speak every human language, modern and historical. However, this is limited to speaking - she can't read everything.
Extensive Memory: With such long lives, angels are implied to have memories that are equally as long, and extremely good recall.
Angel of Death: Each angel has a special power that is innate to themselves. Azrael, as the Angel of Death, is in possession of the following:
Selective Invisibiity: Azrael is able to turn invisible, even to other angels (though this doesn't hide her presence in other ways, such as physical presence, scent, or foreknowledge of her being in the room). She has also shown herself able to be visible to only one person at a time.
Death Prescience: The knowledge of when and where a person is dying, though not whether they actually will die. False alarms happen.
Blade of Death: One third of the original Flaming Sword used to guard Eden, which was broken into three pieces to prevent Lucifer from using it in his rebellion against God. This piece is the blade and hilt, also known as Azrael's Blade, and was entrusted to her care by God. While it is no longer in Azrael's possession (instead it's in a separate universe) it has the following properties:
Eradication: If any creature, human or divine, is killed by the blade, their very essence would be wiped out of existence - completely eradicated from reality.
Enticement: When left unattended, it beckons people to wield it and use it for its intended purpose: murder. When a human being holds it, even the mildest slights - such as annoyance at someone stealing the wielder's pudding, sniping a parking spot, or playing their music too loudly, are suddenly all murder-worthy offenses that only escalate further after their first successful murder. It's possible to resist the mental compulsion, but it takes great mental fortitude and very convincing counterarguments.
Pyrokinesis: The blade can ignite, although this capability is severely reduced due to not being in its true form. The trigger for it is intense, genuine emotion.
Extreme Sharpness: Even in the hands of perfectly normal humans, it is able to easily cut through stone.
ROLEPLAY SAMPLES
- 3rd person/action: Test drive meme from another game!
- 1st person/network:
Okay, um- I just wanna check real quick with you guys, about something that's, uh. That's a little bit weird, even for- you know, us.
Is that little milk-bar around the corner from the museum finally closing down? I legitimately thought that place was like- older than the museum, an eternal bastion of bad 3am life choices, but I saw a closed sign up the other day and now I'm worried.
This is super serious guys. For reals serious.
